Chasing the Clock in the Rain: Larian Jambatan Sultan Nazrin Shah
The weekend started with the best kind of calm. Ahead of race day on October 25th, my polytechnic mate and longtime running buddy, Mr. Valli, and I spent the afternoon unwinding by the seaside. We wandered through the quiet town, caught the salty ocean breeze, and nursed hot cups of local coffee while laughing over old college memories. It was the perfect, easygoing rhythm before what turned out to be a wild morning on the tarmac.
Race day dawned under a relentless, grey downpour that showed no signs of stopping. Knowing standard road shoes would quickly turn into heavy, waterlogged sponges, I made a tactical gamble: out went the sneakers, on came my marathon sandals (selipar lari). While everyone else fretted over soaked socks, I had open drainage, even if it meant fighting for every inch of traction on the slick bridge surface. Every push-off required razor-sharp focus to keep from sliding, but charging directly through the streaming puddles brought a raw, stripped-down thrill.
Pushing through the sting of cold rain and burning calves across the bridge, I dug deep into the final stretch and crossed the finish line in 57 minutes and 48 seconds. Cracking a sub-58 in a pair of sandals through a non-stop storm felt like a proper badge of honor. Cold, drenched to the bone, and catching up with Valli at the finish line—this was easily one of the most memorable runs of the year.
